About Trending
When a news event occurs that warrants the interruption of non-news programming, or a regularly scheduled newscast in some cases, broadcasters usually announce an “Alert” to all affiliates and request that they stand by for the report. The national network will then pause its newscast, or the regular program, and begin a countdown sequence to allow local stations to switch over to the network feed for their own breaking news coverage. Depending on the story, this may last a few minutes or may continue for hours or even days. This type of break is also commonly known as a newsflash or special report.
