When a breaking news story happens, it can interrupt the current non-news program being broadcast and require station affiliates to switch over to the network feed for live coverage. The network will often pause its regular newscast and use a countdown sequence to give affiliates time to join the live feed. A special graphic, usually with a distinctive music cue, is used to signal the breaking news, and lower thirds and other graphics may be altered in order to convey the sense of urgency. The breaking news report will usually last a short period of time, but it may also be sustained for multiple hours or even days, depending on the story.
