A breaking news story is a live event that occurs so suddenly and urgently that it requires a television or radio broadcaster to interrupt current non-news programming (or, in the case of network affiliates, their regular newscast) for an immediate coverage report. These reports are commonly referred to as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report.” In the days before 24-hour news networks, stations interrupted their regular programming for a breaking news story only when it was of extreme significance and required immediate coverage. This was most often seen with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, which required national networks to interrupt all of their affiliates with a special report.
