For decades, television news has lived on the airwaves, but in the last decade, it’s been on cable. The success of cable news is rooted in its ability to serve a commercially profitable audience.
When cable was first launched in the early 1980s, Ted Turner had little experience in the world of news. He’d studied criminal justice. His goal was to become a police officer. Until then, he had only listened to radio.
The new cable TV model embraced live events. Newscasters were excited to take advantage of new technology. But viewers had to wait until the programmers’ clocks turned. In many cases, they could not believe what they were seeing.
Cable’s success encouraged major news networks to enter the streaming business. These operators have repurposed cable programming for the streaming audience. Their programs include documentaries, news analysis, and news reruns.
They also have been successful in targeting both mass and niche audiences. One of the most popular free news streamers is NBC News. It has 31 million hours of content every month.
Another example is CNN, which was criticized for its lack of viewers when it first launched. Its ad blocks were four-and-a-half minutes long. This ad format featured products such as Humira and Liberty Mutual insurance.
ABC News is another major player. The company has been successful in launching a number of streaming services. A few of these include Readly, which has over 6300 digital newspapers.
CBS has also entered the streaming market. The network’s local stations have already nichified coverage. However, the network is not responsible for the content of external Internet sites.
