Breaking news is a term used to describe current events that are so important and time-sensitive that they require an immediate interruption in regular programming. Depending on the event, breaking news coverage may last for only a few minutes, or continue for hours and even days. A breaking news report is often accompanied by special graphics and music cues, as well as a countdown to allow network affiliates to switch to the news feed. Occasionally, lower thirds and other station imaging promotions will also be updated.

Until the rise of 24-hour cable and satellite news channels, breaking news was usually limited to extremely urgent situations, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, that required nationwide attention.
