Current News is a term used for breaking news events that require a broadcaster to interrupt non-news programming or even a regularly scheduled newscast in order to provide coverage of the event. Such interruptions typically involve a newsflash opening graphic accompanied by a distinctive music cue, and station identification is often included in the form of an alert crawl. Prior to the development of 24-hour news networks, these types of breaks were typically limited to extremely serious events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, or a search-and-rescue mission for a downed fighter jet crew member. In recent years, some television networks have begun to use Special Report tickers to highlight select breaking stories during regularly scheduled newscasts, lessening the need for cut-ins or newsflash openings.
