The term breaking news is used to describe any news event that requires an interruption of normal, non-news programming or, in the case of network newscasts, a pause in the current broadcast to allow affiliate stations to switch over to the network feed. This may be for immediate, urgent events such as a tornado warning or an impending hurricane; or it may be for a long-form news story covering an ongoing issue such as a search and rescue operation for a downed fighter jet crew member. Prior to the era of 24-hour news networks, this type of coverage was reserved for major events that demanded nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, for which a special report ticker was used rather than an actual interruption of scheduled programming.
