Breaking news can interrupt programming, especially during primetime. Breaking news can interrupt highly-rated or new programs, or a program that already has a limited amount of time to air. This was the case in April 2017, when a missile was fired at an Iranian nuclear facility, interrupting an episode of ABC’s Scandal. However, a network can prepare its viewers for such an interruption by creating topical graphics that highlight the news event.
The headline of the newspaper is the major story, the largest and boldest print on the centerfold. It’s intended to attract the attention of potential buyers. In the web, trending news is based on the number of web-page hits and is reader-centric. Stories with a lot of ‘buzz’ tend to trend well even if they are not that impactful to society. While the headline of a newspaper is the most important, a trending news story is not necessarily the most important news.
The terms breaking news and late-breaking news are often used interchangeably. Breaking news is generally a live story or major event that has occurred recently. It is also used to refer to events that are important to the public at the time. Some news organizations, however, use the term breaking news in place of “breaking news,” which is also redundant. A breaking news story is one that has been covered extensively by multiple media, but is still important to its audience.
