When a breaking news story elicits the need for a broadcaster to interrupt regular programming, it is known as a Breaking News Report. Until the advent of 24-hour cable news channels, such breaks were often reserved for incredibly urgent news events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or major natural disasters that required stations across the country to interrupt their schedules for live coverage. A typical Breaking News Report features an opening graphic announcing the story, accompanied by a distinctive music cue or station imaging promo. Depending on the severity of the event, the graphic may remain overlaid during the duration of the report.
