Breaking news is an alert that interrupts regular non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts) to cover a breaking story that requires immediate attention. When a news event becomes so significant that it warrants an interruption, a national network will usually send a signal to all of its affiliates urging them to interrupt their programming and join the network feed for breaking news coverage. This is often accompanied by an opening graphic and distinctive music cue.
