If a news event occurs which warrants immediate coverage, current non-news programming (and sometimes regular newscasts) may be interrupted. Often, the national network will alert all of its affiliates to stand by while it switches to its breaking news feed and begins an urgent countdown sequence (similar to a weather delay). The broadcaster usually pauses its newscast in progress and introduces a breaking story through a news anchor, using distinctive graphics and music cues to convey urgency. Some 24-hour news channels use “Special Report” tickers to cover breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, which lessens the need for news cut-ins.
