When a breaking news story occurs that demands the immediate interruption of non-news programming, or a network’s scheduled newscast, a special graphic or countdown sequence is used to inform viewers of the break in regular programming. This is often accompanied by a distinctive music cue, and lower thirds may be altered to communicate urgency or immediacy. Before the rise of 24-hour news channels, interruptions of regular programming for breaking news were typically reserved for events that elicited nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their respective broadcasts simultaneously (such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963).
