The following are terms that are often used in Current News: breaking news, late-breaking news, special report, and “news flash.” Each of these terms refers to the most important story in the moment. This term can also be used to describe a story that is of great interest to many viewers, though it is generally used only after a news organization has already reported it. Another popular term for breaking news is “Just In.”

Breaking news often interrupts programming. This is especially problematic during prime time, when news events can disrupt highly rated shows that still have time to air. One recent example is the ABC episode of Scandal, which was interrupted by a missile strike on the Syrian city of Shayrat. A similar phenomenon occurred during the April 2017 episode of the popular ABC drama Scandal. In such a scenario, viewers would be notified of the breaking news before they could return to their regular programming.

Another example of an event that affects the public is the recent closure of schools and government offices in Sri Lanka. A shortage of dollars has halted public transport in the country. The Public Administration ministry has ordered skeleton services starting Monday due to a shortage of petrol. While the government is working to address the fuel crisis, the US Food and Drug Administration has approved two new vaccines for children as young as six months old. These vaccines are aimed at preventing severe heat illnesses and deaths in children.
