In television news broadcasting, breaking news is the term for urgent and time-sensitive events that warrant an interruption in regularly scheduled non-news programming. Often, this will take the form of a graphical break-in (also known as a Newsflash or Special Report), with a distinctive music cue and lower thirds altered to convey a sense of urgency. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, these type of interruptions were reserved for highly televised national events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy and other incidents that would elicit nationwide coverage requiring many stations to interrupt their programs simultaneously.
