Current News is a term used by television stations and radio stations to describe news of immediate interest to their audience. These can include breaking news, special reports, or news flashes.
Breaking news is usually an event or story that is considered important enough to interrupt programming and report its details live. The interruption can be as brief as a few minutes, or it may last for hours or days, depending on the story being covered.
The format for a breaking news or special report is often identical to that of a regular broadcast newscast, with the network or local station paused in order for other affiliates to join the feed (usually through an internal alert crawl). An opening graphic featuring music such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events” may be rolled, along with a voiceover stating the event and introducing the news anchor who will introduce the story at hand.
After the coverage has ended, the network or local station will normally continue to offer more details and updates on their website and other platforms. If the story is happening in a time slot where programming is pre-empted, the network or station will also remind viewers that there will be more details on their local newscast that day and a full wrap-up on the network’s evening or morning news program if applicable.
On radio, the process is similar to that of television but with some notable differences. Most local all-news radio stations require a breaking news theme by default for any stories that are considered urgent and important to their listeners.
