For decades, TV news has been broadcast on the airwaves. But now, it’s all streaming.
Streaming allows viewers to watch television content from any device, anywhere, at any time. That’s a big deal. And news networks are no exception. They have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on streaming operations.
Streaming TV looks like conventional TV. It offers regular nightly news programs, documentaries, and reruns. The difference is that the news is available to viewers in a timely manner.
News networks have a lot of hope for streaming. For one, it could reduce their media scarcity. Not only does it do for their business, but it also could allow them to archive their content.
Another positive is the fact that it’s free. Unlike cable TV, streaming is not tethered to expensive negotiations with cable companies. In fact, Fox News has attracted 1.5 million subscribers to its Fox Nation streaming app.
A number of free news streamers have sprung up. Some are attempting to replicate the style of cable’s television model, while others are promoting their own version of cable-quality news.
Of course, not all of them are equally effective. News for Kids, for instance, is a US-based site that produces daily roundups of current news written specifically for children. There are also podcasts and explanations of words and concepts that are unfamiliar to young readers.
Other notable contenders include Space Scoop, which covers space and astronomy news. Similarly, the Twig Science Reporter is a free, online primary science news service.
