Trending is a short segment of news or analysis about stories that have been recently discovered and are currently popular. It is often featured on cable and satellite channels, and on online news outlets. It is often presented as a “newsflash” or a “special report,” but it can also be incorporated into regular television and radio programming (as in the case of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which prompted numerous stations to interrupt non-news broadcasts with special reports and alert crawls). In the case of national network newscasts, a countdown is used before an opening graphic and distinctive music cue are introduced.
