Current News, also known as Breaking News or Special Report, is a term used to describe an interruption of regular broadcast television programming to cover a breaking news story. This is most often seen in situations when the news event is a major one, but can also be used for less significant stories that warrant a quick re-broadcast to get more information out to the public.
The format of a breaking news report is typically the same on television as it would be on radio (though with some differences), and the broadcaster usually alerts its affiliated stations through an internal alert/message service, before the program is interrupted. This is followed by an opening graphic (usually featuring music such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events”) which adds to the sense of urgency, and the voiceover of a news anchor.
Depending on the magnitude of the breaking news event, the broadcaster may allow their local stations to take over their evening newscasts and provide continuous coverage until the story has been resolved, or may wait until a local reporter has gotten there to offer more details as they are discovered. After the story has been resolved, a brief outro (usually a promo for additional coverage on their network’s website or via other platforms) may be played.
Breaking news is an important part of the American media and has a wide audience, but it is not an essential element of coverage. It is often used as a filler to fill time during 24-hour news channels.
