During prime time, local television stations may be interrupted by “breaking news” coverage. These programs can be brief in nature, lasting just a few minutes. If there is a prolonged coverage, regular commercial advertising may be suspended to ensure that there is no interruption of coverage.
Breaking news is also known as special report or special coverage. It is the most important story of the moment. In some cases, a reporter may be sent to the scene to provide more details as they are released. A breaking news report can last a few minutes or several hours.
There are also 24-hour news channels that broadcast breaking news. These channels apply the term to news reports that have a great interest among viewers. This type of coverage may be paired with commentary. Some networks may also have a live anchor available to provide commentary during the coverage.
When a breaking news story begins, a reporter introduces the story and highlights its importance. This may be followed by a graphic or music that emphasizes the importance of the story. The anchor may also remind viewers that more details will be reported on local news.
A local television station will usually not have a reverse countdown. When the breaking news story ends, the network will typically switch to a reverse countdown. This may also include a disclaimer that more information is available on the station’s website.
Sometimes, the network will cut to a live shot of the anchor and continue to cover the story. It may also feature a live shot of a reporter at the location of the breaking news event. When coverage is over, the network may switch back to the newscast and resume the previous programming.
