Breaking news is a short report on a developing story that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming (or in the case of a network’s regular newscast, a pause to allow affiliate stations to switch to the feed). The breaking news graphic often uses a distinctive music cue and a different upper third design. The story may be accompanied by a special news anchor, or if the event is large enough, the entire broadcast may be interrupted and “newsflash” or “special report” tickers will be used instead. In the past, such break-ins were usually reserved for extreme events that required nationwide coverage and forced numerous stations to interrupt their regularly scheduled programming. In the era of 24-hour news networks, this has become less common; however, stations still occasionally use special reports in place of normal cut-ins.
Josh Owens, who spent years working for Alex Jones and his Infowars empire, is writing a book about his experience. He joins “The Takeout” to talk about it.
