The term breaking news usually refers to a news event that is so urgent that it must be interrupted by regular non-news programming (or, in the case of a national network’s newscast, an already-in-progress broadcast). When this occurs, the network typically alerts all of its affiliate stations and interrupts the current program with a special graphic and distinctive music cue. The special report may last for a few minutes, or it may run continuously for hours, days, or even weeks. In the days before 24-hour news channels, such breaks were commonly reserved for very serious events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, or a tornado warning.
