Streaming news is set to transform the way we get our current news. It reduces the scarcity in the media equation and allows the delivery of timely, personalized information.

For decades, broadcast news was limited to the local TV station. Radio was stuck in the past. Print was an outdated means of getting the news. But cable television offered a new kind of news. A network could cover today’s news and offer live coverage.

With DVRs, time-shifting became possible. In fact, viewers spent more time watching streaming programs than they did traditional TV.

While broadcast and cable news dominated the news cycle, the Internet was a growing force. Eventually, news networks started to take notice. And they were eager to invest in their online operations.

For example, CNN and Fox invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations. The networks had high hopes of attracting viewers. They believed that a large number of households would subscribe to at least one streaming service.

While CNN had a storied history, its initial foray into the news streaming world was met with skepticism. At first, the company’s free app, CNN+, failed to attract a significant number of viewers. This may have been due to a lack of newsworthy content.

Other networks began to enter the streaming business as well. CBS joined NBC and ABC, and even Cheddar, Al Jazeera, and Newsy have planted flags in the streaming frontier.

Several of these services offer a free subscription. Some have also repurposed programming from traditional broadcast outlets.
