For decades, television news has been broadcast. It has been profitable. But the digital era has changed things. Now, people want faster, more efficient news.

TV networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. And they have high hopes. In fact, NBC News Now claims it produces 31 million hours of programming a month.

Streaming news also offers viewers the ability to choose the content they want to see. So they can watch programs that focus on their particular interests. They can watch the latest breaking news, or they can watch reruns.

Unlike traditional broadcast television, which requires viewers to match a program’s clock, streaming is more customizable. The news can be delivered anywhere.

Streaming has already begun to attract mass audiences. As a result, the major streaming news channels have repurposed programming from their linear broadcasts. These include documentaries and news analysis.

Some news channels offer their streams for free. This creates a sense of urgency among broadcasters to stay competitive. However, some commercial-averse viewers may be content to simply switch to another channel. That is, if they can find a free alternative.

The emergence of online video streaming will reshape the way political and other news is reported. It will remove the restrictions of costly negotiations with cable companies. It will allow news outlets to expand their audience and offer news coverage that is overtly political.

Streaming will make video news ubiquitous. It will cut down on the scarcity of media options.
