Streaming news is one of the latest media innovations. While it’s not yet mainstream, it’s likely to revolutionize the way we get our news.
Streaming networks have repurposed broadcast content to deliver it in a format that allows viewers to watch wherever they want. They also offer a variety of programming, from documentaries to reruns of nightly news.
News networks have sensed the momentum of streaming audiences and invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the new format. Several have entered the business, including NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox. The emergence of these new competitors could bring political news coverage into the 21st century.
Streaming news has also proven to be a hit with a wide range of viewers. A recent report revealed that 85% of households have at least one streaming service.
In fact, the majority of NBC’s audience is under 45. The network has attracted 1.5 million subscribers to its Fox Nation streaming app. This proves that a television audience will pay for news.
The competition for news is only getting fiercer. One America News, the Fox News Channel, and One New York are all rumored to be interested in joining the streaming industry. These new overtly political news operations will likely attract viewers, particularly in politically charged areas.
Historically, cable and broadcast news has been a profitable business. However, as more and more consumers turn to digital products, the industry is beginning to see its audience dwindle. Consumers have become frustrated with low-quality, high-cost products and are turning to alternatives.
