Trending — A current news item, or an event that has become a topic of interest. A breaking news story will often interrupt non-news programming, and will also usually cause a network feed to pause for a countdown sequence to allow affiliates to switch over to the network feed and carry the report. When a breaking news story is deemed to be of such serious concern that it warrants an interruption of regularly scheduled programming, the broadcast will typically open with a distinctive graphics package and music cue, which is then followed by the news anchors reporting on the story. Breaking news reports may be accompanied by scrolling tickers on the screen, or in a dedicated ticker.
