Current News is a term used to describe a news story that is breaking on the media. Breaking news stories are often the most significant news stories of the moment and may be the subject of live coverage.

The most commonly reported breaking news events are the assassination of an important political figure or an event that is causing widespread panic, such as a natural disaster or a terrorist attack. Some breaking news events are more prolonged and can last for days at a time (the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and the September 11 attacks are a notable example of such sustained coverage), while others can only be covered for a few minutes or a short period, such as an emergency broadcast about a severe weather event.

Usually, when a breaking news report warrants an interruption of regular programming, the network will alert its affiliate stations through an internal alert service to stand by for the interruption. This is typically followed by a brief countdown and an opening graphic of a news anchor and/or music that emphasizes the importance of the event.

When the news anchor is ready to introduce the breaking news story, he or she will welcome viewers to the broadcast and begin announcing the story. Alternatively, the network or station may choose to keep the anchor at the scene of the event.

Depending on the duration of the breaking news coverage, the anchor may remind viewers that more details will be available on their local station later in the day or on the network’s overnight news program the next morning. In other cases, a network may resume its non-news programming and resume its newscast in progress at the point of the interruption if it is highly rated or has a large amount of time left to air.
