When a breaking news event occurs that warrants an interruption of regular non-news programming or regularly scheduled broadcasts, a news anchor will usually announce the change and urge viewers to stay tuned. The network will then pause its normal feed for the duration of the break-in, often with a countdown sequence. This allows network affiliates to switch to the national network feed in order to carry the breaking news report. During this time, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey urgency. Depending on the severity of the news event, it may last for several minutes or hours or even days.
