What are the various types of Current News? Breaking news, late breaking news, and special coverage are terms used interchangeably to refer to the biggest story of the moment. Breaking news can also refer to a story that has recently occurred that is of broad interest to viewers. These terms are used in the context of a live story, but often only after a news organization has covered the story first. Other terms such as “Just In” are also commonly used.

The most popular form of current news is a headline. A headline is the major story of the newspaper and is typically the boldest, largest print on the centerfold. It is meant to grab the attention of potential buyers. Trending news changes from day to day based on the number of web-page hits. This type of news is reader-focused, and often has little societal impact. While headlines should be informative, the majority of stories ‘break’ are less important.

Breaking news can disrupt popular programming. It interrupts newly premiered series, highly rated programs, and shows with little time left to air. ABC’s Scandal episode was interrupted by the April 2017 Shayrat missile strike. Some networks even move their daytime programming to an auxiliary digital subchannel, which airs in conjunction with the main signal. But if breaking news breaks during primetime, viewers might not notice. And if the news is so important, it can even affect what programs are broadcast in prime time.
