Breaking news is a news event that warrants the interruption of current non-news programming and/or regularly scheduled network and local newscasts. Often, the national network will alert all its affiliates that an urgent news event is occurring, and a countdown graphic will be shown to allow stations to switch to the news feed. After the countdown is complete, an anchor will introduce the story at hand and may use lower thirds or other graphics to convey a sense of urgency. In some cases, breaking news events will require a sustained coverage that lasts for several hours or even days.
