Breaking news is a live television or radio news event that is so urgent or significant that it requires an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming, or in the case of network newscasts, of a regularly scheduled broadcast. The breaking news will often have a distinctive newsflash graphic or music cue. It is usually followed by a live news anchor, who will introduce the story at hand. A break in programing is also referred to as a “special report” or a “special bulletin.” Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were usually reserved for major events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required numerous stations to interrupt their programming for live coverage. Today, many major news organizations have “Special Report” tickers that can be inserted into regularly scheduled programs during an urgent story. This has lessened the need for network affiliates to use cut-ins or alert crawls during regular programming.
