About Trending
A breaking news story is a news event that requires immediate, ongoing coverage. The breaking news may require a national network to interrupt non-news programming (or, in the case of a live national network newscast, stop the broadcast), alert its affiliates with a special countdown sequence and begin a separate feed, often overlaid on lower thirds or anchored by an on-air personality. Depending on the nature of the news, the break could last only a few minutes or be sustained for hours or even days. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, break-ins and “Newsflash” graphics were used to interrupt regular programming and alert viewers to urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
