Streaming news reshapes the way we cover politics and news. With a host of new players entering the arena, a multitude of new choices will undoubtedly feed audience polarization.

Aside from being a great tool for delivering news, streaming has also proven to be an effective way to attract niche audiences. The streaming model repurposes cable programming into a custom-built, personalized experience.

Major news networks have embraced streaming operations as a means of serving a growing, digitally-savvy audience. They’ve spent hundreds of millions of dollars to develop a streaming infrastructure.

Streaming has allowed viewers to watch content whenever and wherever they want. It has helped make video news ubiquitous. Streamers have a chance to customize the experience, from choosing which news programs they’d like to see, to which topics they’re interested in discussing.

Streaming has also made building a library of news inexpensive and practical. As news becomes more and more commoditized, consumers are frustrated with low-quality, high-cost products. This frustration creates a kindling for innovation.

For instance, Fox’s Fox Nation streaming app is attracting 1.5 million subscribers, and is expected to grow to five million by 2020. Despite the fact that the service has yet to generate a profit, it has proven that television audiences will pay for quality content.

In addition, CBS News has aggressively launched a local streaming news strategy. By 2022, the network plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news to its subscribers.

Aside from delivering current news, streaming also allows viewers to catch up on reruns and documentaries. In addition, the streaming process allows the networks to archive content.
