Breaking news is an event that occurs that warrants the interruption of current non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts) to report on it. The network usually starts with a countdown, asking affiliates to “stand by” for the breaking news, before the national feed pauses and begins a special graphics package, often overlaid with a distinctive music cue. If the breaking news is significant enough, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey urgency. Prior to the rise of 24-hour news networks, these interruptive breaks were restricted to events with nationwide significance, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
