Streaming news has emerged as a disruptive force. It’s akin to cable, but based on the demand of viewers rather than the technological advantage of broadcasters. The multiplicity of new choices could also feed polarization. If viewers are commercial-averse, they may not want to pay for TV news, and may be content to watch streaming.
Streaming networks have repurposed programming that once appeared on cable. This includes documentaries, news analysis, and nightly news programs. They also offer reruns.
When a breaking news story breaks, the network may interrupt existing programming, rerun previous programs, or even switch back to a newscast. Depending on the length of coverage, the network may reschedule the program for later. It may also integrate the coverage into a newscast, or it may pass the coverage to a reporter at the location of the breaking event.
Historically, broadcast news has been a profitable business. However, financial pressures, mental health issues, and pandemics have created new levels of stress for people around the world. Streaming news has helped alleviate the pressure.
Breaking news on broadcast television has a similar process to radio breaking news. The anchor introduces the story and sometimes plays a musical number to emphasize its importance.
Streaming news is also able to travel wherever viewers go. It can appear on a viewer’s computer, tablet, or smartphone. It also allows viewers to customize their experience.
