When a news event occurs that requires immediate interruption of current non-news programming, or occasionally even regular network television newscasts, broadcasters often interrupt with a newsflash or special report. These graphics (which may be accompanied by a distinctive music cue) will usually include a countdown sequence to allow time for network affiliates to switch to the network feed. Then, a news anchor will come on air, introduce the breaking story, and begin reporting on it. In recent years, some networks have started to use special tickers during regularly scheduled newscasts for some breaking stories, lessening the need for these cut-ins. [4]
