In broadcast television and radio, breaking news is a special report on an event that warrants immediate attention and interrupts current non-news programming or a scheduled newscast. It may also be called a newsflash, alert crawl or special report. The term breaking news is used mostly for events that require an immediate response, such as severe weather or the assassination of a politician. Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, programming interruptions (called “cut-ins”) were generally reserved for very urgent news such as an ongoing war or a natural disaster that could affect many people. News networks now typically use “Special Report” tickers during regularly scheduled programming to lessen the need for cut-ins.
