Trending is a series of stories that are currently causing some controversy or have recently received a great deal of attention. The stories are chosen based on how much traffic the story has generated on social media.
Breaking news is a type of broadcast journalism that covers events that are of such immediate concern that they warrant an interruption of current non-news programming or, in the case of network affiliates, the network’s regularly scheduled program. This is most common with 24-hour news networks, where the anchor is available for a live interruption if necessary. When such an event occurs, the broadcaster will alert its affiliated stations and tell them to “stand by” for the news. This is often accompanied by a countdown sequence that allows the network’s affiliates to switch over to its feed.
