Current News, also known as Breaking News and Special Report, is a news format in which current events are reported on. It is a news feature of both television and radio, with breaking news coverage generally being broadcast on national network television as well as local stations in each time zone.

Historically, breaking news coverage was limited to events that required immediate attention or that would not be able to be fully covered during a regular newscast. This included breaking news about the death of a political leader, terrorist attacks, and other major public events that were likely to cause disruptions in day-to-day life.

Today, however, breaking news coverage can be extended into the evening for a variety of reasons. For example, a story about a severe weather event may have a longer runtime than an ordinary newscast; this is because it might be more important to alert viewers of the possibility of a tornado or hurricane before it is even visible on radar.

The format of breaking news on television typically consists of a brief countdown before the opening graphic and voiceover announcement, followed by the introduction of a news anchor introducing the breaking news. Depending on the magnitude of the event, the network’s feed may pause to allow other affiliates to join the program.

When the coverage has concluded, the broadcaster will usually re-join the programming that was in progress before the interruption and/or start new programming, with the anchor reminding viewers of the details that were uncovered during the break. The closing outro includes a promo directing viewers to the network’s website (or that of the station, if coverage is provided locally) and other platforms (including television and streaming news channels) for continued coverage.
