When an event occurs that requires immediate attention, breaking news coverage (“Newsflash” or “Special report”) interrupts regular non-news programming (or, in the case of a network newscast, a pause in the newscast to allow affiliated stations to switch to the network feed). It is typically introduced with a graphic and music cue, and lower thirds may be altered to indicate urgency. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, programs were interrupted for breaking news only when it constituted national or international importance and was deemed urgent enough to justify interruptions of all current programming.
