When an urgent news event occurs that warrants interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, regular scheduled programs), stations typically alert their affiliates and ask them to stand by. Then, the current program will pause or end with an announcer calling viewers to “stand by for breaking news” followed by a countdown sequence that will lead into the breaking news feed from the network (as well as other network feeds). In addition to the news anchor’s voice-over, graphics may be overlaid to convey urgency.
*Note: This graphic was used to break the news of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, an event that demanded nationwide coverage and interrupted many stations. It was a precursor to the now-common ticker breaks that occur during normal programming on 24-hour news channels.
