In North America, until 24-hour news networks came along, breaking news events requiring national network affiliates to interrupt regular non-news programming were typically limited to severe weather and national security issues that warranted nationwide coverage. Often, these breaks were marked by a distinctive newsflash graphic and a countdown sequence to alert viewers to the change in programming. In recent years, some broadcasters have begun using “Special Report” tickers for select breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
