Trending is a segment of Current News that focuses on stories that have recently been making headlines or have been discussed in the media. It’s an opportunity for NPR journalists to provide further analysis of a breaking story that catches their attention, or delve into a topic that is currently under investigation or debate. Trending may be used as a substitute for the breaking news interrupter when no new breaking story arises that warrants such an interruption.
Breaking news is a short news program that interrupts regular non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled, long-form newscasts).
