Trending is a news segment that talks about the latest topics that are currently being discussed on social media. The segment may be delivered by a news anchor, or a celebrity that is featured on the program. The trending topic is then analyzed in-depth and discussed by the anchor or celebrity on-air. The segment is usually introduced with a special graphic, a countdown sequence and a distinctive music cue. In the past, breaking news events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy would prompt station cut-ins, but 24-hour news networks have now started to use “Newsflash” or “Special report” tickers during regularly scheduled programming to interrupt regular commercial advertising for urgent news events.
