Historically, broadcast news has been a profitable business. It was only a matter of time before news networks took advantage of streaming technology to meet the needs of a new audience.
Streaming news is essentially TV news in a digital format. It is delivered to the viewer based on viewer demand. The news may be in the form of news headlines, documentaries, or even live anchors.
News coverage can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Networks may choose to suspend regular commercial advertising to provide sustained coverage. The lower thirds may be redesigned to convey a sense of urgency.
In addition to streaming news, major streaming networks also offer news analysis and reruns of their popular nightly news programs. The outro may direct viewers to the network’s website or to another channel.
Streaming news has been around for ten years or so, but the technology has been around for much longer. It is now being used to deliver news to viewers in the most efficient manner.
In the past, there was no way to deliver timely news to viewers on demand. It took time for networks to figure out how to meet the needs of a streaming audience. A DVR allowed for time-shifting of programs. It also allowed networks to archive content for future use.
One of the earliest “breaking news” announcements involved the JFK assassination. The assassination took place between November 22 and 26 in 1963. The news was reported by CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite.
