Breaking news is a news event that requires an immediate interruption of current non-news or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts. This type of coverage is most commonly seen on the 24-hour news networks. Breaking news is usually accompanied by a newsflash or special report opening graphic, and often a distinctive music cue. A station identification may be overlaid on top of the opening graphic. Until recently, breaking news was mostly used to interrupt regular programming, but now it’s commonplace during certain severe weather events as well.
