LIVE: White House holds press briefing | NBC News

Current News, also known as Breaking News or Special Report, is a term used by broadcasters to denote stories that they feel warrant an interruption of scheduled programming or current news in order to report their details. These could include breaking news of a major event, such as a presidential inauguration or the death of an important political figure, a story of general interest that has received little attention previously, and/or a story that is being covered live.

The format of a breaking news report typically begins with an opening graphic (often an image reminiscent of NBC’s “The Pulse of Events” composed by John Williams), featuring music that emphasizes the importance of the event, followed by the introduction of a news anchor, who introduces the story at hand. The anchor may then continue to report on the coverage for a few minutes, or for an extended period of time – for example, for a news story involving a natural disaster, it might be continuous for hours or days.

After the coverage has ended, a promo may be played to direct viewers to watch the network’s website or a sister station for further details and/or information. This is particularly common for breaking news pertaining to national or international news events; the outro might also include a disclaimer that a viewer should check their local station for more information.

While it is rare for a breaking news event to occur during a program, if it does happen it can interrupt the entire broadcast. In such cases, the network will pause their programming for an internal alert/message service utilizing the master control to communicate with their affiliate stations; the information is then sent to their talent for them to resume their evening newscasts.
