About Trending
Breaking news is a television and radio broadcast event which requires current non-news programming or, in the case of 24-hour news networks, regularly scheduled newscasts to be interrupted. Normally, breaking news events are signaled by a network to its affiliated stations with a countdown sequence to pause all national and local programming for a special report. During these reports, lower thirds and other graphics may be modified to convey urgency. Prior to the establishment of 24-hour news channels, this type of interruption was used solely for extremely important or time-sensitive events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
