Streaming news has proven itself to be an effective medium for reaching mass audiences. It allows viewers to customize their news experience, while traveling where they want to go. It also cuts the scarcity of the media equation. Streaming allows networks to archive their content, enabling them to keep their audiences engaged.
Breaking news, or special coverage, is when an event occurs that is of interest to a significant number of people. This can be a live story or one that happened in the past. It can last a few minutes or several hours.
Breaking news can interrupt an overnight news program or a local newscast. The network will allow the local station to break away from the network feed. The local station may cut to video of the story or a live shot of the anchor. This gives the local station a chance to break away from the feed and begin an evening newscast.
In the past, a town crier or news sheet would have been used to report current events. A town crier was limited by the distance he could travel and the news sources he could access. A news sheet, on the other hand, was portable and sharable.
When breaking news occurs, the anchor will introduce the story. The news anchor will also remind viewers that the full details of the news will be reported on the local news. The anchor may change the lower thirds to convey a sense of urgency.
