About Current News
Trending is a special segment of a television program that covers the most popular stories on social media. It often appears on the bottom of the screen during a newscast and features a variety of different topics including trending hashtags, celebrities, viral videos, memes, etc. In some cases, the show will also include an analysis of the topic by a guest. The segment will often have its own opening graphic and unique music cue that distinguishes it from the rest of the program. The show’s format may change depending on the story. For example, during an event requiring extensive coverage, the newscast may break into an “alert crawl” in lieu of a regular cut-in.
In recent years, 24-hour news networks have begun to use a breaking-news ticker on selected events during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for a dedicated break in the broadcast. This is similar to the breaking-news format used by radio stations until the 1990s, when only severe weather events triggered an interruption in programming.
