Breaking news is newsworthy information that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts). When a breaking story occurs that demands immediate attention, stations will normally use a special graphic to alert viewers and provide a countdown sequence for network affiliates to switch over to the national feed for a Special Report. This is particularly common with 24-hour news networks that have anchors ready to go at any time.
